the perfect cup at Cup Coffee

IMG_7060

I’m so late to the game … been meaning to to Cup Coffee since forever. ( I think I start 90% of my blog posts this way .. haha)
we were full from gorging on delicious thai food over at Red Chilli Thai so we couldn’t try the food here (next time next time) .. But their coffee was legen… (wait for it..) “dairy” (haha) . It’s surprising how a good cup of coffee can really lift the mood and set the day straight, the milk was steamed so silkily that I almost couldn’t bring myself to ruin it. haha. Unlike a lot of Australian roasters I find Cup Coffee’s beans a lot more saltier – which I prefer – (Genovese and Campos are a lot more acidic)

Cup Coffee is a specialty roaster / cafe in Westend, the space is almost like a grungy dock / garage with cool graffiti stencils here and there, and  a wallpapering of cool art stensils out the back.

yo!

my soy cap .

(LOVE!!!! their letterpress biz cards + coffee bag tags)
Their coffees can be found in other hip places across town such as Sourced Grocers (that I blogged about here

design for Kayrene Le Marchant

Screen shot 2012-10-09 at 2.51.30 AM

my logo and business card design for make up artist Kayrene Le Marchant;
sexy black matte with silver foiling

if you’re in search of a talented make up artist in Brisbane look no further -
I love Kayrene’s charisma and her infectious laughter : )
(I know who I’ll be using for my engagement shoots … )

A honey concept

Screen shot 2012-09-27 at 8.08.50 PM

my preliminary concept design for Bee One Third, an up and coming team of Brisbane based bee keepers with ‘a vision to bring the honeybee back to its rightful place within Brisbane’s urban sprawl.’

their brand name is inspired by the fact that one third of the world’s crop production is facilitated by pollinators!

the design is an abstract deduction of beehives frames and tessellating hexagons, keeping the recurring theme of ’3′ consistent throughout the design

Branding of Dear and Tine

Screen shot 2012-09-30 at 1.41.36 AM

Recently I have been working on a few exciting projects (that I can’t wait to blog about!! but hush hush until it’s all out of the oven! )

I was approached to design a new up-and-coming boutique wedding photography.

It was an open brief but the client was very taken by the theme of antlers and deers. Antlers are naturally majestic structures; male deers shred and regrows their antlers every year. This continual sense of growth and re-invention alludes to the creative business – we constantly morph and change to achieve a better outcome.

And thus, Dear and Tine was born.

logo & logotype

Dear is a play on the word deer, as photography is about capturing the dearest moments. Tine is every branch of an antler, signalling the point of growth and expansion (and also made me think of the word ‘valentine’!)

my inky deer

 their website in progress

“Antlers are a symbol of power and strength, yet deers are such graceful creatures. They have a great sense of perception and are very sensitive to changes, or movements. I want to tell stories with a different perception, and I want to break away from convention.” - Dear and Tine

In my line of work it’s a rare opportunity to be able to find clients that share the same vision and appreciation of quality, streamlined design!  Personally I love their work and aesthetic sense; their photography is honest and natural, capturing the ethereal beauty between loved ones.

Based in Australia, Dear and Tine is also available for International booking – they are booking up fast, so hurry and get a slot!

More graphics collateral for them to come, stay tuned!

I feel like this shop deserves a separate blog post when I venture back for food and coffee!

A wonderful little community artspace and cafe – keep tabs on them as they frequently have classes and events happening all year round. Artists and designers can rent their wallspace to showcase their art, or create unique gifts specifically for the shop!

At the moment they are hosting the fine artist and designer Stephanie Lawson in the in-store studio out the back : )

QT Hotel Gold Coast

IMG_6808

QT Hotels is a new group of designer hotels across Australia, offering luxury in the most dapper form.
To sum it up … breathtaking, contemporary interiors, delicious food & savvy lounge precincts,
(and from what I’ve heard) extremely cool rooms. It’s definitely one of the hippest travel destination QLD has to offer, with every corner looking like it belongs in Wallpaper* or Cool Hunter!

It’s the first sign of revival amidst the sandstorms of construction & redevelopment that Gold Coast has been undergoing.

Feast your eyes on this!!

I squealed when I saw the baby blue Vespa (that says RENT ME – heehee how very Alice in Wonderland) parked outside and these interesting pebbles-on-a-skewer structures

Note the funky staff uniform (!!!)

love these button backs!

ooh how very Marimekko

I was very impressed by the unconventional gift shop, offering a range of contemporary Australian goodies from Robert Gordon, T2  to Pigeon Hole … and many more!

ding ding !

mojitos here were AMAZING

will go back for a stay ASAP!

Mizu

IMG_6590

Mizu - meaning ‘Water’, alludes to purity and tranquility, which suits this little gem nested in the foodie suburb of Teneriffe. So excited to discover another authentic Japanese restaurant in town! Fresh, delicious sashimi are relatively easy to come by, but good quality (and affordable!) cooked Japanese food are as scarce as hen’s teeth around here – probably due to the fact that in a lot of Japanese restaurants usually the skilful chefs are manning the sashimi bar, whilst the deep fried / cooking stations gets less attention – but not here!

a cool wall of gyotaku! (traditional Japanese fish printing or rubbing)

the first time we came we had maguro tataki, tonkatsu and crab & soba salad
it was so good I wanted to stand up and applaud the staff. haha

the girls are so cute! all giggly and happy : )

tamagawa omachi sake (exclusive to MIZU!)

delicious bento of the day – hamburg, sashimi & tempura!
will blog next time about the dinner with pictures (when I bring my camera out for a date!)

Sculpture is Everything

IMG_6618

what we do on our days off – find things to doodle on : )

went on a gallery date with Chaddycakes :

an installation created for the Brisbane Writer’s Festival – made us smile!

-

‘Sculpture is Everything’ showcases a selection of large scale GOMA acquisitions of magnificent art forms from kinetic structures to ritualistic installations captured on film and photography. When I think of sculptures it’s usually in a traditional sense: a 3D form that’s be sculpted from clay or other materials, new forms created from manipulating existing objects, but this show has challenged the boundaries of what defines sculptural art.

Corner Store Cafe Toowong

IMG_6334

I can’t believe it. I’ve been obsessed with Corner Store Cafe for over a year
(it’s really the only place I recommend if people ask ‘hey so where’s a good breakfast?’) and
I have never ever blogged about it. SHAME!

The cafe itself is split into two parts, the indoor area contains an epicurean grocery (where I get my Bonsoy fix) with fresh lilies delivered daily, an open kitchen plan (so open that you actually walk through it!) and cosy nooks for sitting. That part is restored from a historic cottage, which I can only assume, used to be an old corner store, giving it the unique character that one can only experience from an old building. The extended patio seating area capitalizes on the famous Brisbane sunshine : )

Love the recent appropriation of subway tiles!

with cosy throws and cushions that adds a touch of warmth and homeliness to the space

an organic herb & veggie patch out the back, providing us with the freshest ingredients!

The airiness of the space & abundance of white on wood is all together very Scandinavian to me!
I love the oversized bulbs with colourful wiring -
I have one too but I have no space to hang it at the moment : )

if you’re in a bit of a rush pick up some of their freshly baked goods (nom nom nom)

they also proudly serve Fairtrade Organic clean skin coffee

ok food time.

their croque-monsieurs are to die for

their poached eggs are perfection.

as it’s been a while since I’ve been (yes it’s been a little over a week…)
I can’t remember the name of these dishes but let me assure you they are divine ~

silky goodness

Mr & Mrs G Riverbar

IMG_0841

Finally I revisited Mr & Mrs G Riverbar armed with a proper camera!!
(Testing the new Canon 40mm lens)
So … let me set the scene.
Twenty years ago, Marcia & Andy Georges gave us Il Centro
(their sand crab lasagne gives me lady wood…),
and now they’ve brought to us a contemporary bar designed by
Anna Spiro (oh god I just love, love love her shop … ! )
Thus a perfect combination of riverside view, dapper,
modern moroccan inspired interiors and tantalizing cocktails
& fresh seafood nibbles was born…

I’ve visited the space 3 times in the last 2 weeks … yes it’s that good

I see the ‘Spiro’ touch everywhere!

It’s Tiki Time! Love at first sip.

the weather’s just been amazing!

Back at Lady Lamington

IMG_6406

Recently I’ve been doing a lot of freelance work at home, which basically means my nights turn into days, and I’m a confused ball of brainstorming fur. But it also means that I get to have decadently long brunches and annoy my white collar friends by tagging them in pictures of glorious food adventures say, at 9am on a Monday (ha)

I’ve previously blogged about the wonderful Lady Lamington Cafe (here)
but last time I didn’t get a chance to try their food!

so, with much foodie determination … I went back twice in 2 days for breakfast AND for a late brunch (haha)

the breakfast, beautifully slow cooked eggs, goats curd and creamed dutch potatoes

croque-monsieur with a fried duck egg – the bread was deliciously thick and brioche like

close up of my eggs and its translucent goodness

a silky soy cap with black sheep coffee beans

and my brunch session with Chaddycakes (whom I love and adore)
disclaimer : we parked round the corner from Pablo, so we basically walked a suburb to reach
Lady Lamington … and it was 3 pm and it’s our first meal!

her English Breakfast came with a tiny antique milk bottle (oh just too cute)

Chad’s iced coffee served in a little glass gum boot!

it was a greattttt deal – $32 and you can select 3 different dishes!
(so following from the earlier disclaimer you can understand why we had 2 rounds of this!!)

delicious beef cheeks x potato puree & onion rings

crunchy duck pastries

pan fried cheese x rocket

crab croquette with aioli

sichuan salt and pepper squid! happy curly-ness

and we walked back to the car (or rolled back down hill as Chad puts it haha)
and look! lately the clouds are so cellulite-y!

and that concludes today’s post of gluttony

Olé, Olé Olé Olé

IMG_6192

Sunday after work we wanted to go check out the Vintage & Handmade bridal showcase at The Ship Inn – but turns out the tickets were sold out a week ago (dayaamnnn!)
so we headed over to Olé for the Sunday deal : “Sunset Tapas”
$50 for 2, includes a jug of sangria, 2 tapas and 2 mains – what a steal!

cute lasercut patterns on wooden panels as roofing
the restaurant carries a contemporary design that’s more Australian than Spanish,
with an open and airy space that expands into the sidewalk when the large glass doors are opened
every time we walk past it’s always bustling with live Flamenco guitarists!

unfortunately the seating was a little bit too cramped for comfort, and the wait staff kept knocking into our chairs by accident! (though when I was in Barcelona the tapas places were often little taverns that were uber cramped too ..)

calamari w. whitebait & aioli

chickpea fritters, nice and spicy

so much fresh fruit! delicious white sangria

soft cured pork and paprika sausage, scallops and pork crackling

and finally … some delicious cheese to round up the evening

Burrowing into The Burrow

IMG_6154

have always been meaning to go check out The Burrow
from the outside it’s an inconspicuous little hide out …
the only giveaway being the irresistibly cute bunny rabbit squashed under a rolling pin!
and it’s just risen to the top of my favourite ‘hang out  spots’

down with extreme nose allergy …  so I shan’t rant too much today!
